Congo's former President KABILA launches an anti-government front including M23 rebels

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 -Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has launched a new political and military coalition, the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), bringing together opposition forces that include the M23 rebel movement.

The announcement was made on October 12, 2026, in Goma, a major city in eastern Congo controlled by M23 since January 2025. The move places Kabila at the centre of a new alliance challenging President Félix Tshisekedi’s government as fighting continues across the conflict-hit eastern region.

The coalition says it aims to unite resistance forces and restore effective governance, with adviser Claude Ibalanky stating that its objectives could be pursued through force. Former Congo River Alliance leader Corneille Nangaa is among the coalition’s senior figures, alongside other leaders associated with the armed movement.

The Congolese government had previously accused Kabila of supporting the rebellion, allegations he denied. In 2025, a military court sentenced him to death in absentia for treason and other crimes linked to the conflict; Kabila dismissed the proceedings as politically motivated.

The formation of the FRN threatens to complicate already fragile peace efforts aimed at ending the conflict in eastern Congo. The region remains affected by armed clashes, mass displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis, while diplomatic initiatives have struggled to secure lasting progress.

The coalition’s emergence raises urgent questions about the future of negotiations, civilian protection and regional stability. With the government yet to issue an immediate response to the announcement, attention is now turning to whether the new alliance will intensify fighting or alter the direction of ongoing peace talks.
