At least five people missing as flash floods in Nepal sweep away houses

Monday, October 12, 2026 -At least five people have been reported missing after flash floods swept through parts of Nepal, carrying away houses and leaving communities facing a desperate search for survivors.

The sudden flooding has raised fresh concerns about the safety of residents living near rivers and vulnerable hillsides, where intense rainfall can trigger dangerous surges of water with little warning. Emergency teams are working to establish the full extent of the damage as families wait anxiously for news of missing relatives.

The disaster began after a landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha district before the accumulated water broke through and surged downstream. The powerful torrent swept away dozens of houses, damaged bridges and affected hydropower construction sites, leaving roads and essential infrastructure severely disrupted.

Authorities reported that at least 82 people, including nine foreign nationals, had been rescued, while helicopters and military personnel were deployed to assist evacuation and relief operations.

Officials have urged residents living along the riverbanks to move to safer locations as rescue teams continue searching for the missing. The latest disaster comes as Nepal continues recovering from earlier deadly floods and landslides, reinforcing concerns about the country’s exposure to sudden flooding and other natural hazards.

Emergency assistance, early warnings and safer evacuation measures remain critical as affected communities assess their losses and begin the difficult process of rebuilding.
