U.S. invites VLADIMIR PUTIN to December’s G20 summit in Miami

Thursday, September 23, 2026 - The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami this December, opening the possibility of another direct meeting with President Donald Trump.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the invitation on September 23, saying the gathering could give Putin an opportunity to engage with Trump and other world leaders.

The invitation comes as Washington continues efforts to reduce fighting between Russia and Ukraine. Rubio said the United States remains interested in dialogue, including discussions around a possible limited ceasefire involving energy infrastructure and grain-related targets.

However, no broader peace agreement has been reached, and Russia and Ukraine remain divided over the conditions for ending the war.

Moscow has not yet confirmed whether Putin will attend. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia appreciates the invitation but that a decision will be made through diplomatic channels.

If Putin accepts, the Miami summit could create a high-level forum for discussions on the Ukraine war and U.S.-Russia relations, while placing renewed attention on whether direct diplomacy can produce concrete results.
