TODD RUNDGREN claims that TAYLOR SWIFT “ruined music” and calls her the “apotheosis of mediocrity”

Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - Veteran musician and producer Todd Rundgren has sparked a fresh debate after taking aim at Taylor Swift in a new interview with Vulture.

Asked which contemporary artist he would target if he were producing an album designed to mock a major star, Rundgren immediately named Swift, saying there was “an argument to be made that she ruined music” and describing her as “the apotheosis of mediocrity.”

Rundgren went further, questioning Swift’s abilities as a singer, songwriter and performer.

He also offered his own explanation for the dominance of female pop stars, arguing that the rise of video games in the 1990s changed how record companies viewed their audiences and helped shift the industry toward younger female consumers.

Those comments represent Rundgren’s personal interpretation of the music business rather than an established explanation for Swift’s success.

The remarks arrive while Swift remains one of the biggest names in contemporary music, making Rundgren’s criticism likely to fuel further discussion among fans and music listeners. Swift has not publicly responded to the latest comments.

Rundgren, meanwhile, has a career spanning more than six decades as a performer, songwriter and producer, giving his comments added weight even as they remain his personal assessment of Swift and the modern music industry.
