Thailand floods kill 23, affect 700,000 people as Bangkok battles severe inundation

Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - Thailand is facing a major flooding emergency, with at least 23 people killed since September 16 and about 700,000 people affected in Bangkok alone.

Flooding has hit 29 provinces, while the capital remains under pressure after intense rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems. Authorities say around 7,000 people are sheltering in more than 230 locations across Bangkok, while schools remain closed in affected areas.

The crisis is disrupting homes, businesses, transport and travel as authorities work to drain water from heavily flooded neighborhoods. Bangkok received around 320 millimetres of rain in three days, almost equivalent to its normal September rainfall.

Suvarnabhumi Airport has also faced major disruption, with thousands of bags stranded and Thai Airways reducing flights as staff struggled to reach work.

Floodwaters are beginning to recede in parts of Bangkok, but officials warn recovery will take time, particularly in low-lying areas. Authorities are accelerating drainage and relief operations while monitoring further rainfall and river levels.

The immediate priority is protecting residents, restoring transport and helping affected businesses recover as Thailand confronts one of its most disruptive flooding emergencies of the current rainy season.
