Wednesday, September 23, 2026 - Gary “Angry” Anderson, the legendary frontman of Australian hard-rock band Rose Tattoo, has died aged 79. Anderson died on Monday, September 21, surrounded by loved ones in Australia, according to a statement from his family and bandmates released Wednesday.
His death comes weeks after he suffered a cardiac arrest while Rose Tattoo were touring in Germany, forcing the band to end its European farewell tour early.
Anderson was the unmistakable voice of Rose Tattoo, whose powerful rock sound produced enduring songs including Rock ’n’ Roll Outlaw, Bad Boy for Love, Nice Boys and We Can’t Be Beaten.
Beyond music, he built a career in television and film, including a role in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, while also becoming known for youth advocacy and charity work. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his work as a youth advocate.
Rose Tattoo and Anderson’s family described him as a devoted father and much-loved bandmate, friend and member of the wider entertainment community. They have asked for privacy as they grieve and thanked fans for their prayers and messages of support.
Anderson’s death marks the loss of one of Australian rock’s most recognisable performers, whose gravelly voice and commanding stage presence continued to define Rose Tattoo until his final years.
