Tuesday, September 8, 2026 - Several police officers have been injured and vehicles damaged during an anti-migrant protest in Portsmouth, as tensions over Channel crossings escalate in southern England.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered near Eastney after around 140 migrants arrived by boat, with protesters attempting to block the transfer of the migrants to a processing centre in Kent. Police were deployed to keep roads clear and prevent the situation from escalating further.
The protest became confrontational as masked demonstrators attempted to obstruct vehicles carrying the migrants away from the area. Official vehicles belonging to police and other emergency services were damaged, while a number of officers suffered minor injuries.
Authorities have launched an investigation into alleged assaults and criminal damage, with police working to identify those responsible. The Portsmouth demonstration came just days after a similar anti-migrant protest disrupted traffic around the Port of Dover.
