Thursday, September 23, 2026 - One Indian national has been killed after the bulk carrier MV Cape Dao came under attack while sailing towards India off the coast of Oman.
The Indian Embassy in Muscat confirmed the death and said it was coordinating with Omani authorities over the safety of the crew. The vessel, flagged to Antigua and Barbuda, was carrying Indian nationals among its crew when the attack occurred near Oman’s Musandam governorate.
Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said 27 crew members were evacuated following the attack, with the vessel catching fire and one crew member dying.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said 19 Indian seafarers were rescued and condemned the attack, describing the continuing attacks on commercial shipping in the region as deeply concerning.
The deceased Indian seafarer was identified by the Forward Seamen’s Union of India as Suraj Yadav, a wiper from Uttar Pradesh.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of commercial vessels and civilian seafarers operating around the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz.
Indian authorities are working with Oman on the repatriation of the rescued seafarers, while New Delhi has called for dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions. The attack adds fresh pressure on efforts to keep vital international shipping routes open and protect crews operating in increasingly dangerous waters.
