Wednesday, September 9, 2026 - Norway has held a state funeral for King Harald V, bringing the nation to a standstill as thousands gathered in Oslo to pay their final respects.
A 21-gun salute opened the funeral procession from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral, where the king was remembered as a popular and approachable monarch. Harald died on August 28 at the age of 89 after 35 years on the throne.
The ceremony drew royal families and political leaders from around the world, including Prince William, the monarchs of Sweden, Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Monaco and Jordan, as well as Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Harald's son, King Haakon VIII, led the royal family behind his father's coffin, marking a highly visible moment of transition for Norway's monarchy.
Public emotion has been equally striking. More than 46,000 people visited Harald's coffin while he lay in state, while large crowds lined Oslo's streets for the funeral procession. After the service, Harald was laid to rest at Akershus Fortress.
The immediate focus now shifts to King Haakon VIII and the future of a monarchy that remains largely ceremonial but continues to play an important national and international role.
