Wednesday, September 9, 2026 - At least five people were killed and 35 injured after Russia launched a major overnight barrage of drones and missiles against Kyiv, in one of the capital's most serious recent attacks.
Ukrainian officials said residential buildings, a school, clinic, dormitory, warehouses and other civilian sites were damaged across several districts, while emergency crews battled fires and searched damaged buildings.
The assault comes immediately after a brief pause in strikes linked to visits by US peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Ukraine said its air defences intercepted most of the incoming drones and cruise missiles, but ballistic missiles remain particularly difficult to stop.
The renewed bombardment is raising fresh concerns about Ukraine's ability to protect its population and critical infrastructure as Russian attacks become more frequent and sophisticated.
The latest escalation puts pressure on international efforts to end the war while delivering another warning to Kyiv's civilian population. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is urging stronger international pressure on Moscow, as Ukraine seeks additional air-defence systems and missile interceptors.
With attacks now disrupting homes, businesses, schools and essential services, the immediate priority is preventing further civilian deaths while keeping diplomatic efforts alive.
