Sunday, September 13, 2026 - Noel Gallagher has revealed a tense but amusing memory involving one of Johnny Marr’s most iconic guitars.
While visiting Marr’s collection ahead of a major auction in London, the Oasis guitarist recalled borrowing a 1982 black Rickenbacker 330, the instrument Marr used while creating Smiths classics including “This Charming Man” and “What Difference Does It Make?”. Gallagher admitted he worried Oasis might damage the treasured guitar during the band’s early days.
Gallagher recalled that Marr had sent guitars to Oasis while they were recording their debut album Definitely Maybe, at a time when the group had very little equipment. One of Marr’s guitars was subsequently used for the artwork of Oasis’s 1994 debut single Supersonic.
Gallagher jokingly described Marr as having always been “a bit gung-ho” with his guitars, highlighting the close connection and trust between two influential Manchester musicians.
Marr is now preparing to auction around 80 guitars from his personal collection at Christie’s in London on September 17, with some instruments carrying estimates of up to £150,000.
The collection includes guitars connected to some of the most important moments of his career, making the sale a major event for music fans and collectors. Gallagher’s memories add another layer to the story, showing how Marr’s instruments became part of Oasis’s rise during the band’s earliest and most important years.
