Tuesday, September 8, 2026 - Miriam Margolyes has addressed the backlash over her controversial exchange with TV presenter Andi Peters on This Morning, insisting she never intended to embarrass or hurt him.
The 85-year-old actor made the comments while speaking at a Southend event promoting her new memoir, after viewers criticised her for questioning Peters about his racial background during a live interview.
The controversy erupted after Margolyes questioned Peters about his heritage, incorrectly speculated about his parents and used an outdated and offensive term while discussing his skin tone.
Peters revealed that both of his parents are Black, while producers appeared to become concerned about the direction of the conversation. The segment was subsequently removed from the ITVX version of the programme, intensifying public discussion around the incident.
Margolyes has defended her intentions by saying she is fascinated by how people view identity and how others perceive them. However, her explanation has done little to end the debate, with critics arguing that intent does not erase the impact of remarks about race.
