Malaysia’s former PM hospitalised in Kuala Lumpur after wife’s death

Wednesday, September 30, 2026 - Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for observation, just two days after the death of his wife, Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali.

Mahathir, 101, was admitted on Tuesday night, with his son Mokhzani saying there was no immediate cause for concern and that his father was in stable condition.

Mahathir’s aide said the former premier had been fatigued and had not been getting enough rest following his wife’s death. Siti Hasmah, 100, died at the National Heart Institute on September 28 after 70 years of marriage to Mahathir.

She was later buried at the National Cemetery in Putrajaya with full state funeral honours.

The hospitalisation comes as Mahathir faces an emotional period following the loss of his longtime wife and companion. His family has reassured the public that he is stable, while doctors continue to monitor his condition.

Mahathir has experienced health problems in recent years and has undergone repeated hospital treatment, making his latest admission closely watched in Malaysia.
