Wednesday, September 30, 2026 - The Pentagon has confirmed that it is examining the possibility of establishing a permanent U.S. military base in Poland, as Washington reviews its wider military presence across Europe.
The review was disclosed by Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby in a statement submitted to Congress, which said the United States is holding technical discussions with allies while examining potential opportunities for a permanent U.S. base in Poland.
The discussions come as the Pentagon considers longer-term U.S. troop deployments across Europe. Recent talks between U.S. and Polish defence officials have focused on strengthening military cooperation, while the broader review is expected to consider recommendations from U.S.
European Command as well as consultations with Congress, NATO and allied governments. No final decision on a permanent base in Poland has been announced.
The issue is gaining attention because the United States has simultaneously reduced the number of Army brigade combat teams in Europe, including units previously deployed on a rotational basis in Poland and Romania.
Poland has sought a stronger and more permanent U.S. military presence, while Washington's ongoing review will determine how American forces are positioned across Europe over the longer term. The outcome could shape the future of U.S.-Polish defence cooperation and the broader NATO security posture in Europe.
