Monday, September 21, 2026 - Eighteen suspects accused of involvement in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse have been extradited from Haiti to the United States to face trial in Florida.
A U.S. military plane transported the suspects from Port-au-Prince on Sunday, marking a major new phase in the case. U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones said 30 people have been indicted in connection with the killing.
The group includes 17 former Colombian soldiers and Joseph Badio, a former Haiti Ministry of Justice employee who was part of an anti-corruption unit.
The suspects had remained in Haiti as legal proceedings were repeatedly delayed by gang violence, threats against judges and the deteriorating judicial system. Haitian authorities said the transfer was intended to allow the case to proceed in U.S. courts.
The extradition comes as U.S. prosecutors continue pursuing others accused of involvement in Moïse's assassination. Four men were convicted in a Miami federal court in May, while at least five others have pleaded guilty and are serving life sentences.
The latest transfers place renewed focus on establishing accountability for the killing as Haiti continues to face severe insecurity and political instability.
