Sunday, September 27, 2026 - Lionel Richie is set to return to the American Idol judging panel for Season 25, giving fans a major update after his recent health concerns.
Richie confirmed the news during a virtual appearance at Luke Bryan’s Nashville concert on September 24, where he joined Bryan and Carrie Underwood in announcing that the judging trio will return. Ryan Seacrest will also resume hosting duties when the show returns in 2027.
The announcement comes shortly after Richie underwent a procedure for atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm.
His representative said the procedure went perfectly and that the 77-year-old singer is doing well, although he is taking time away from performing to recover. Several upcoming concerts were also postponed as he focuses on his health.
Richie’s return puts a familiar face back at the center of American Idol as the competition prepares for its milestone 25th season.
Auditions are already underway, while the new season is expected to premiere in spring 2027, bringing Richie, Bryan, Underwood and Seacrest back together for another search for America’s next singing star.
