Monday, September 28, 2026 - Heavy rainfall has triggered deadly floods and landslides across northern India and Nepal, leaving at least 68 people dead in the latest wave of extreme weather.
In India’s Uttar Pradesh state, 56 people have died, 46 others were injured and more than 1,000 houses were damaged. The state recorded 66.5 millimetres of rain between September 25 and the morning of September 27, far above the 7.6mm average for the period.
Nepal has also been hit by renewed flooding and landslides, with officials reporting at least 12 deaths since September 24 and seven people still missing.
Authorities have warned of possible flash floods in 49 of Nepal’s 77 districts, while rising rivers continue to threaten communities and infrastructure. More than 1,100 people have reportedly been evacuated as emergency preparations intensify.
The immediate focus is now on rescue operations, evacuation and restoring damaged infrastructure as heavy rain continues to pose risks across affected areas.
In India, more than 70,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas of Odisha after rivers swelled, while Nepal has reported disruptions to power supplies and damage to hydropower infrastructure.
The rapidly changing conditions underline the need for residents in high-risk areas to follow official warnings and move to safer ground when instructed.
