Monday, September 28, 2026 - Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has withdrawn from the national squad and will not play in Ireland’s Nations League fixtures against Israel, citing his personal beliefs and opposition to the killing of civilians.
Bazunu announced his decision after telling manager Heimir Hallgrimsson that he was uncomfortable participating in the matches. The 24-year-old goalkeeper said representing Ireland means a great deal to him but that he could not take part in the upcoming fixtures against Israel.
The decision came as the Irish squad held lengthy discussions over whether to fulfil the fixture amid pressure for a boycott because of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. After several hours of talks, the players voted by a significant majority to proceed with the matches.
Ireland also agreed to wear black armbands in recognition of lives lost in the conflict and to refrain from parts of the traditional pre-match ceremony, including handshakes and the exchange of pennants.
Bazunu’s withdrawal has drawn widespread public and political reaction in Ireland, while the Football Association of Ireland has stressed that players were entitled to their individual positions during the discussions.
The first match took place in Debrecen, Hungary, on September 27, with a second fixture scheduled for October 4 in Bačka Topola, Serbia. The controversy has placed renewed focus on the intersection of international football, politics and the humanitarian concerns surrounding the Gaza conflict.
