Tuesday, September 1, 2026 - Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo has opened up about the intense backlash he faced after publicly coming out as gay earlier this year.
The 33-year-old musician said his decision to live openly and present himself authentically was met with “a lot of opposition” and, in his words, “a lot of homophobia.” Shomo said the reaction came during an already difficult period in his personal life, making the experience particularly challenging.
Shomo said he eventually stepped away from the internet to escape the negativity while continuing to perform and work on music. He admitted that there were days when he was in a “really, really bad place” and had to find enough strength to get himself on stage and perform.
Despite the ongoing criticism, he has continued moving forward, supported by his bandmates and his former wife, Fleur Shomo, from whom he jointly filed for divorce in May after nearly 14 years of marriage.
Now, Shomo is channeling the experience into his music as he works on a new Beartooth record. He says he has a lot to process and work through, taking the next stage of his life in “baby steps.”
His decision to speak openly about the backlash highlights the pressure public figures can face when choosing to live authentically, while his continued focus on music shows that he is determined not to let the criticism define his career or his future.
