Monday, September 7, 2026 - BBC News presenter Maryam Moshiri has revealed that she has been living with blood cancer after being diagnosed with polycythaemia vera (PV) in November 2024.
The 49-year-old broadcaster has continued working while undergoing treatment and says she is sharing her experience to raise awareness about the disease.
PV is a rare blood cancer in which the bone marrow produces too many red blood cells, making the blood thicker and increasing the risk of serious complications including blood clots, stroke and heart attack.
Although the condition cannot currently be cured, it can be managed with ongoing treatment. Moshiri has described the treatment as gruelling and says fatigue has been among the challenges she has faced while continuing her demanding broadcasting career.
Her decision to speak publicly brings fresh attention to the realities of living with a long-term cancer diagnosis while maintaining a normal life and career. Moshiri says she wants her experience to encourage greater awareness and support for people affected by blood cancers.
Her story is also a reminder that serious illnesses are not always visible—and that early medical attention and continued research remain critical.
