Monday, August 31, 2026 - President Donald Trump has threatened to report NBC journalist Kristen Welker to the Federal Communications Commission for what he called a “purposeful inaccuracy” in her coverage of his political endorsements.
Trump objected after Welker said he had achieved “mixed results” with candidates he backed in Republican primary elections ahead of the November midterms. Trump argued that his endorsement record remained overwhelmingly successful, citing victories among candidates he supported.
Trump said Welker should face an FCC “rebuke or punishment,” escalating his latest confrontation with the news media. NBC News has defended Welker, describing her as “one of the best in the business.” The comments have immediately raised questions about whether the FCC has the authority to punish a journalist over political reporting or commentary.
The dispute is intensifying scrutiny of the relationship between the Trump administration, federal media regulators and major broadcasters.
FCC rules and First Amendment protections place significant limits on government intervention in news coverage, and Democratic FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez said the agency has no authority to punish journalists simply because the administration dislikes their reporting.
