Thousands await aid in Indonesia after powerful earthquake that killed at least 68

Wednesday, August 19, 2026 - Thousands of survivors on Indonesia’s Flores Island are urgently waiting for food, clean water, medicine and shelter after a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake killed at least 68 people and injured more than 200.

The disaster struck East Nusa Tenggara early Saturday, damaging thousands of homes and leaving around 19,000 people in temporary shelters as fears of further tremors keep residents away from damaged buildings.

Relief teams are racing against difficult conditions to reach isolated communities. Landslides and blocked roads have slowed deliveries, while authorities have recorded more than 1,500 aftershocks.

More than 1,800 military and police personnel have been deployed, with emergency supplies including food, medicine and tents being transported by aircraft and other vehicles. Emergency field hospitals have also been established after health facilities were damaged.

The immediate priority is keeping survivors alive and reaching communities still cut off from assistance. Families remain exposed in makeshift camps while rescuers continue assessing damage and searching affected areas.

With thousands of homes damaged and basic services disrupted, the coming days will be critical as Indonesia works to deliver aid, restore access and prevent the disaster from becoming an even greater humanitarian emergency.
