Monday, August 31, 2026 - A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported.
The incident occurred about 12 nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman, and no casualties or environmental impact have been reported. Authorities are investigating, while the vessel’s identity and the source of the projectile remain unconfirmed.
The incident comes as maritime traffic through the strategic waterway faces renewed disruption. Shipping data shows the number of visible commodity vessels crossing the Strait has fallen sharply, with only about five vessels transiting per day over the weekend as operators respond cautiously to continuing attacks and security threats.
The latest tanker strike raises fresh concerns for global energy supplies and commercial shipping. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical route for oil shipments, and further attacks could increase shipping costs, insurance premiums and pressure on already volatile energy markets.
