Thursday, August 27, 2026 -A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Gulf of Aden early Friday, August 28, shaking waters between Somalia and Yemen, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake occurred at about 12:07 a.m. local time and was recorded roughly 145 kilometers off Somalia’s northeastern coast, at a depth of around 10 kilometers.
Despite the strength of the earthquake, there were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries or significant damage in northeastern Somalia.
Seismic monitoring reports indicate that the offshore location reduced the immediate impact on populated areas, while the USGS issued a low-impact assessment. Initial monitoring also found no indication of a tsunami threat from the earthquake.
Authorities and seismic agencies are continuing to monitor the region for possible aftershocks and developments. The earthquake was also recorded by Germany’s GFZ, which placed it at roughly 10 kilometers deep and reported a magnitude of 6.2.
With the quake occurring in the seismically active Gulf of Aden, residents and authorities across nearby coastal areas remain alert as monitoring continues.
