Thursday, August 27, 2026 -Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has appointed Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi as an adviser to the presidency, marking a major political shift just days after the dissolution of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The appointment was made under Decree No. 164, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA. Abdi, who led the SDF for years, now moves from commanding a powerful armed force to taking an official role within Syria’s central government.
The move follows the completion of an agreement to integrate the SDF and its institutions into the Syrian state. Abdi announced on August 25 that the group had ended its existence as an independent military force, with its fighters being incorporated into Syria’s armed forces.
The development strengthens Damascus’ efforts to consolidate control while bringing senior Kurdish figures into government structures.
The appointment could become a crucial test of Syria’s new approach to Kurdish political and cultural rights. Alongside Abdi’s new role, the government has moved to expand Kurdish-language education in areas with significant Kurdish populations and has taken steps to formally recognize Kurdish rights.
The immediate challenge will be turning the political agreement into lasting cooperation, security and meaningful representation as Syria pushes toward greater national stability.
