Friday, August 14, 2026 -Poland says it has foiled an alleged Russian intelligence-backed assassination plot targeting a U.S.-Ukrainian citizen in Warsaw.
Polish security services detained a Russian national on August 7 after investigators allegedly determined that he had been recruited by Russian intelligence to carry out the killing. Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the case as an unprecedented attempt to target a U.S. citizen on the territory of another NATO member.
The intended victim has not been publicly identified, and authorities have not released details about how the planned attack was supposed to be carried out.
Tusk said the target was considered “uncomfortable” by the Putin regime and credited Poland’s Internal Security Agency, police and U.S. intelligence services with helping prevent the attack. The suspect remains in custody as investigators continue examining the alleged Russian connection.
The case is likely to intensify concerns across Europe about Russian intelligence operations beyond Ukraine. Poland has increasingly warned of espionage, sabotage and other covert activities linked to Moscow, while NATO members have stepped up counterintelligence efforts.
For Warsaw, the latest arrest sends a clear warning: alleged attempts to target opponents or supporters of Ukraine on Polish soil are being treated as a direct national-security threat.
