Friday, August 14, 2026 -A passenger train derailed near Lewes railway station in East Sussex, southern England, leaving 11 people injured and triggering a major emergency response.
Two people suffered serious injuries while nine others sustained less serious injuries after three carriages overturned. The train was carrying about 150 passengers when the accident happened at around 3:44 p.m. local time on Thursday.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene as some passengers were initially trapped inside the overturned carriages.
British Transport Police declared a major incident, with police, firefighters, paramedics and helicopters involved in the rescue operation. All passengers were eventually safely evacuated, while some injured people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Investigators have now begun examining what caused the derailment, with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch supporting the inquiry. Rail services in the area have been disrupted, with passengers warned to expect significant delays.
The immediate priority remains caring for those injured and determining why the train left the tracks, while authorities work to ensure the route is safe before services resume.
