Friday, August 14, 2026 -The USS George Washington is heading toward the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed for more than 260 days supporting U.S. military operations against Iran.
The move comes as reports raise growing concerns about conditions aboard the Lincoln, including supply shortages, plumbing problems and mounting strain among its roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines.
The prolonged deployment has drawn increasing attention from lawmakers and military families, particularly following reports of mental-health crises and sailors attempting to go overboard.
U.S. Navy officials have disputed claims of a rise in suicidal behaviour and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected reports that conditions have significantly deteriorated. Still, the Lincoln's unusually long time at sea has intensified calls for greater oversight of crew welfare and military readiness.
The arrival of the George Washington will provide much-needed relief for the Lincoln but also highlights the growing strain on America's global naval commitments.
The Washington is being redirected from the Pacific, temporarily reducing the U.S. carrier presence there as tensions remain high in the Middle East. The urgent challenge now is to sustain military operations while ensuring exhausted crews receive proper support, supplies and relief.
