Friday, August 14, 2026 -Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council chief Faiq Zidan has arrived in Damascus for talks focused on ISIS detainees transferred from detention facilities in northeastern Syria to Iraqi prisons.
The visit comes as Baghdad and Damascus move to strengthen judicial and legal cooperation, with the detainee issue emerging as one of the most urgent matters between the two countries.
The talks have already produced a significant step: Iraq and Syria agreed to establish joint judicial committees to review the cases of ISIS prisoners transferred to Iraq.
About 5,700 detainees were moved from Syria to Iraq earlier this year after security conditions around the detention facilities deteriorated. Iraqi officials say the committees will coordinate on investigations, trials and other legal issues surrounding the prisoners.
The cooperation could shape the next phase of the region’s long-running fight against ISIS. Baghdad and Damascus are expected to deepen coordination not only on detainees but also on terrorism, organized crime and cross-border offenses.
With thousands of suspected ISIS members now under Iraqi custody, the pressure is growing for authorities to deliver prosecutions while ensuring the cases are handled through clear and credible judicial processes.
