GILLIAN ANDERSON opens up about secret teenage romance and calls PETER MORGAN her ‘life partner’

Monday, August 17, 2026 - Gillian Anderson has offered a rare and deeply personal look at her sexuality, revealing that one of her first relationships was with an older girl at high school. In a new interview with The Sunday Times, the 58-year-old actress described the relationship as “secretive and illicit,” saying they felt they had to hide it.

Anderson explained that she did not have the language at the time to understand her feelings because she had also dated boys, leaving her unsure how to define her sexuality.

Anderson also spoke unusually openly about her relationship with screenwriter Peter Morgan, the creator of The Crown. Although the pair have generally kept their personal lives private and have had an on-and-off relationship since 2016, Anderson said the person she considers her “life partner” happens to be male.

She added that she believes she would feel the same way if that person were a woman, suggesting that her understanding of love and partnership has become less tied to gender as she has grown older.

The revelations come as Anderson continues to take on roles that explore identity, sexuality and unconventional relationships. Her latest film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, has given the actress another opportunity to explore themes that connect closely with experiences she says she might have struggled to understand as a teenager.

Her candid comments now offer fans a rare glimpse behind the public image of one of television’s most recognisable stars—and show how dramatically her perspective on relationships has evolved over the decades.
