Monday, August 17, 2026 - Amanda Abbington has reached a reported five-figure out-of-court settlement with BBC Studios following her complaints about her experience on Strictly Come Dancing.
The actress, who left the 2023 series after five weeks, had accused her professional partner Giovanni Pernice of bullying and inappropriate behaviour during rehearsals.
The BBC later investigated the allegations, upheld some of Abbington’s complaints and apologised to her, while clearing Pernice of the most serious allegations, including physical aggression.
The reported settlement also includes a contribution towards Abbington’s legal costs and brings an end to the prospect of a lengthy legal battle.
The payment was reportedly made by BBC Studios rather than from the television licence fee. Abbington had previously spoken publicly about the impact of her time on the programme, including being diagnosed with PTSD, while Pernice has denied the serious allegations against him.
The agreement comes as Strictly Come Dancing prepares for its 2026 season under renewed scrutiny over contestant welfare. Following its investigation into Abbington’s complaints, the BBC introduced additional safeguards, including chaperones in rehearsal rooms and enhanced welfare support.
For Abbington, the settlement closes a turbulent chapter that began with her 2023 appearance—and puts renewed attention on how television productions protect performers behind the scenes.
