Uganda set to discharge last Ebola patient, starts countdown to virus-free status

Thursday, July 16, 2026- Uganda is preparing to discharge its final Ebola patient, marking a major step toward ending the country’s latest outbreak.

The release will trigger a 42-day monitoring period required by the World Health Organization (WHO) before Uganda can officially be declared free of the virus.

Health officials say the country has made significant progress in controlling the outbreak, with recovered patients leaving treatment facilities and surveillance systems remaining active.

Uganda’s remaining challenge is preventing any new infections during the countdown period while maintaining rapid response measures.

The development brings renewed hope for communities affected by the Ebola threat and highlights the importance of strong public health systems, early detection, and cross-border cooperation.

As Uganda moves closer to a virus-free declaration, authorities remain focused on vigilance until the final clearance is confirmed.
