Hong Kong police arrest five over ‘seditious’ books in latest security crackdown

Thursday, July 16, 2026- Hong Kong authorities have arrested five people accused of handling and selling books allegedly linked to “seditious” content, marking the latest enforcement action targeting independent bookstores.

Police carried out searches at two bookstores in Mong Kok and detained two men and three women as part of a national security investigation.

The arrests followed a customs referral involving a shipment of books that authorities said contained material with “seditious intention.”

Police allege the publications could encourage hostility toward government institutions, the judiciary, and law enforcement agencies, while critics warn the action raises fresh concerns about freedom of expression and access to information.

The case has intensified debate over Hong Kong’s publishing environment, with independent bookstores facing increasing pressure as security laws continue to shape what materials can be displayed or sold.

The latest arrests highlight growing global attention on the balance between national security measures and protection of civil liberties.
