Tuesday, May 5, 2026-A United Airlines flight arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport was involved in a rare and unusual ground incident after striking a light pole and a truck near the New Jersey Turnpike, according to transportation and airport officials.
The aircraft had just completed its landing sequence when the series of collisions occurred in the airport’s surrounding approach area, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Authorities say the aircraft remained under control during landing, but events unfolded as it transitioned toward ground movement near airport-adjacent road infrastructure.
Emergency crews quickly secured the scene, assessed passengers and crew, and coordinated with airport operations to manage traffic disruptions around the Turnpike. No fatalities have been reported, though some injuries were assessed on-site.
Federal aviation officials and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to review the incident to determine how the aircraft came into contact with both airport infrastructure and nearby roadway equipment.
Investigators will focus on taxiing procedures, visibility conditions, and coordination between air traffic control and ground operations as part of the early inquiry.
