Russian drone hits Romanian apartment building near Ukraine border, oficials say

Friday, May 29, 2026-A Russian drone has struck an apartment building in Romania near the Ukrainian border, according to Romanian officials, in an incident that has sharply raised regional security concerns.

Authorities said the drone impact damaged the structure and forced the evacuation of residents as emergency teams secured the area and assessed potential risks from unexploded debris. The strike is being treated as a serious airspace violation inside NATO territory.

Romanian defense officials confirmed that the drone entered national airspace during overnight activity linked to ongoing attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure across the border.

While no fatalities were immediately reported, several people were injured and local authorities warned that the structural damage could require extended repairs. NATO representatives have been briefed, and allied air defense coordination has been heightened in response to the incident.

The strike has intensified concerns about the widening geographic spillover of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly as neighboring countries experience increasing risks from stray or targeted aerial weapons.

Security analysts say repeated border-region incidents are pushing NATO to reassess air defense coverage and response readiness in Eastern Europe. As investigations continue, the episode underscores how the war is increasingly affecting civilian areas beyond Ukraine’s borders.
