Hundreds arrested in India following deadly violence after West Bengal state elections

Thursday, May 7, 2026-Hundreds of people have been arrested in India following a wave of post-election violence in West Bengal, where clashes erupted shortly after the state assembly results were declared.

Authorities report that at least two to four people were killed amid widespread incidents of arson, vandalism, and political confrontations between rival party supporters. Police say the unrest spread quickly across multiple districts, forcing rapid deployment of security forces to restore order.

Officials confirm that more than 400 arrests have now been made as law enforcement intensifies operations to prevent further escalation. The Election Commission and state police have ordered a “zero tolerance” approach, directing immediate action against those involved in violent activities.

Investigations are ongoing, with over 200 FIRs filed as authorities work to identify organizers and prevent retaliatory attacks in already tense regions.

The situation highlights the volatility that continues to follow closely contested elections in West Bengal, where political rivalry often spills into street-level conflict. While the newly elected leadership consolidates power, security agencies remain on high alert to prevent renewed outbreaks of violence.

Officials warn that maintaining stability in the coming days will be critical, as both political tensions and public anger remain high across the state.
