Colombia accuses Ecuador of "deliberate interference" in presidential election amid tariff spat

Saturday, May 30, 2026-Colombia has formally accused Ecuador of interfering in its presidential election after Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa publicly linked tariff removal to cooperation with a Colombian presidential candidate.

According to Colombia’s foreign ministry, the move crosses a diplomatic line by appearing to favor a specific political figure during a tightly contested election period. The dispute comes just days before Colombians head to the polls, intensifying an already volatile political and economic relationship between the two neighbors.

The controversy is rooted in an escalating trade conflict that has seen both countries impose and retaliate with tariffs over border security and drug trafficking concerns. Ecuador previously introduced heavy tariffs on Colombian goods, prompting countermeasures from Bogotá, including reciprocal trade restrictions and diplomatic protests.

The latest escalation began when Ecuador announced tariff changes following discussions with a Colombian candidate, a move Bogotá argues undermines electoral neutrality and violates principles of non-intervention.

As tensions rise, both governments are now balancing domestic political pressure with regional stability concerns. Colombia has demanded that trade and diplomacy remain separate from electoral processes, while Ecuador insists its decisions are tied to security cooperation and regional crime prevention.

With the election imminent, the dispute adds another layer of uncertainty to an already polarized political climate, where economic policy, border security, and foreign influence are increasingly intertwined.
