Wednesday, May 6, 2026- A separatist movement in Alberta is escalating its push for independence after claiming it has collected enough signatures to force a provincial referendum on whether the oil-rich region should leave Canada.
The group, Stay Free Alberta, says it has submitted nearly 302,000 signatures—well above the roughly 178,000 required under provincial rules—marking a major milestone in a campaign that has been building for months.
The petition was delivered to Elections Alberta in a high-profile show of support, with organizers arguing that growing “western alienation” and long-standing disputes over energy policy justify putting secession directly to voters.
If verified, the referendum could be scheduled as early as October, though officials still need to confirm the authenticity of the signatures before anything moves forward. Despite the momentum, Premier Danielle Smith has reiterated she does not personally support separation, even while stating the government would proceed with a vote if the legal threshold is met.
Even if a referendum takes place, independence is far from guaranteed. A “yes” vote would not automatically make Alberta a separate country, and any move toward secession would likely trigger complex negotiations with the federal government, alongside legal challenges involving Indigenous treaty rights and constitutional law.
Analysts note that public support for independence remains limited, but the petition has intensified a political fault line that continues to shape Canadian unity debates.
