Man wounded after allegedly shooting at Secret Service near Washington Monument

Wednesday, May 6, 2026- A man was shot and wounded after allegedly opening fire on U.S. Secret Service agents near the Washington Monument in a fast-moving confrontation that briefly triggered panic in the National Mall area.

Authorities say the incident unfolded when agents approached the suspect, who was believed to be armed, prompting him to flee and discharge a weapon toward law enforcement. Agents returned fire, striking him and ending the threat.

According to law enforcement accounts, the encounter began after officers observed suspicious behavior near a crowded intersection close to key federal landmarks. During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly drew a handgun and fired at pursuing agents, leading to an exchange of gunfire in a heavily visited public area.

A bystander was also injured during the chaos, though officials have emphasized that no Secret Service personnel were harmed.

The shooting has intensified concerns about security in the heart of Washington, D.C., particularly around government buildings and high-profile public spaces. The White House was briefly placed on heightened alert as investigations began into the suspect’s background and possible motive.

Federal prosecutors have since charged the individual with assaulting federal officers and discharging a firearm during a violent crime, underscoring the seriousness of the attack and the risks faced by security personnel operating in dense urban environments.
