Minneapolis grapples with the impact of TRUMP's largest immigration crackdown yet

Wednesday, May 6, 2026- Minneapolis is still absorbing the fallout from what federal officials have described as one of the most aggressive immigration enforcement surges in recent U.S. history.

The operation, which brought thousands of federal agents into the Twin Cities area, triggered widespread arrests, workplace disruptions, and sustained fear across immigrant communities. While enforcement activity has recently eased, local leaders say the social and economic ripple effects remain deeply visible in neighborhoods, schools, and small businesses.

The crackdown, known as Operation Metro Surge, led to thousands of arrests and large-scale enforcement actions that critics say went beyond targeted criminals and swept up broader immigrant populations.

The operation also sparked protests, legal challenges, and allegations of excessive force, further straining relations between federal authorities and local governments. Community organizations report that fear of detention has changed daily behavior, with some residents avoiding work, public services, and even essential travel.

Even as arrest numbers have begun to decline, Minneapolis is now dealing with longer-term consequences—lost income for workers, instability for families, and weakened trust between communities and law enforcement.

Local officials warn that recovery will take time, especially in immigrant-heavy sectors of the economy that were heavily disrupted during the surge. With federal policy still signaling strict enforcement ahead, the city remains on edge, balancing reduced operations today with uncertainty about what comes next.
