Saturday, April 25, 2026- U.S. military officials are preparing contingency plans that would target Iranian military capabilities around the Strait of Hormuz if the current ceasefire with Iran collapses, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.
The planning reflects growing concern over renewed escalation in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
The options under consideration focus on what officials describe as Iran’s “asymmetric” maritime capabilities, including fast-attack boats, minelaying vessels, and coastal systems used to disrupt shipping.
The aim would be to reduce Iran’s ability to restrict or threaten passage through the Strait of Hormuz and nearby Gulf shipping lanes, which have already been heavily disrupted by the wider conflict.
The proposed approach marks a shift toward a more concentrated military focus on maritime chokepoints, after earlier operations prioritized inland targets.
Officials stress that no final decisions have been made, but the plans remain on the table as the ceasefire remains fragile and global shipping continues to face significant risk in the region.
