TRUMP’s navy secretary ousted over dispute about shipbuilding

Saturday, April 25, 2026- U.S. Navy Secretary John Phelan has been removed from his post following an escalating internal dispute over shipbuilding priorities within the Pentagon.

The decision, confirmed through administration sources, comes amid broader tensions between defense officials over how to modernize and expand the U.S. Navy fleet. According to reports, disagreements centered on competing visions for ship construction strategy and budget allocation, with senior leaders divided over long-term naval readiness goals.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other senior Pentagon officials had reportedly clashed with Phelan for months over the direction of the Navy’s shipbuilding program.

The dispute intensified as the administration pushed for rapid expansion plans, while critics inside the Pentagon argued the strategy risked inefficiency and delays. Officials described the conflict as part of a wider restructuring effort aimed at aligning military leadership more closely with current defense priorities.

Phelan’s departure adds to a period of rapid turnover in top defense roles, raising questions about stability inside the Pentagon during a time of heightened global tensions.

The Navy has already moved to install acting leadership as it continues overseeing major fleet programs and ongoing maritime operations. Analysts say the shake-up signals deeper disagreements over the future shape of U.S. naval power and how quickly it should be rebuilt.
