United Airlines raises bag fees amid rising fuel costs and introduces tiered premium fares

Sunday, April 5, 2026-United Airlines has announced an increase in baggage fees as part of a broader strategy to offset rising fuel costs, which have significantly impacted operating expenses.

Passengers will now face higher charges for both checked and overweight luggage, a move that the airline says is necessary to maintain service levels and safety standards.

In addition to the baggage fee hike, United is introducing tiered premium fares that offer passengers more flexibility, priority boarding, and additional perks.

The airline aims to provide a range of options catering to different traveler needs, from economy travelers seeking basic services to business-class passengers looking for added convenience and comfort.

Industry analysts note that these changes reflect a growing trend among U.S. carriers to adjust pricing structures in response to fuel volatility and market pressures.

While some travelers may push back against higher fees, the airline hopes the tiered fare system will help balance cost recovery with customer satisfaction.
