TRUMP threatens to fire Fed chief POWELL if he does not resign

Thursday, April 16, 2026-President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Federal Reserve leadership, threatening to fire Chair Jerome Powell if he does not step down after his term ends on May 15.

Trump’s comments came amid growing pressure over interest rate policy and ongoing disputes about the Fed’s independence, as well as a contested transition plan for the central bank’s leadership.

The standoff is centered on Powell’s refusal to confirm he will immediately leave his position, with the chair stating he intends to remain on the Federal Reserve Board unless a successor is fully confirmed.

Trump, meanwhile, has backed a replacement nominee but faces delays in the Senate, where political resistance and an ongoing federal investigation into the Fed’s operations have complicated the confirmation process. The dispute has raised legal questions about how far presidential authority extends over the central bank.

The confrontation has intensified concerns in financial and political circles about the independence of the Federal Reserve, an institution traditionally insulated from direct political control.

With markets watching closely and legal experts warning of potential court battles, the situation has become a high-stakes test of the balance between economic governance and executive power.
