Hungary’s prime minister-elect vows to suspend ‘propaganda machine’ state media

Thursday, April 16, 2026-Hungary’s incoming prime minister has vowed to suspend what he describes as a “propaganda machine” within state-controlled media, signaling an early and aggressive push to reshape the country’s information landscape.

The prime minister-elect said the state broadcasting system has been used for years to amplify government messaging and suppress critical voices, and pledged immediate reforms once in office.

The plan reportedly includes restructuring editorial leadership, increasing transparency in public funding, and introducing independent oversight mechanisms to reduce political influence over news coverage.

The announcement has already triggered strong political reactions, with supporters calling it a necessary step toward media independence and critics warning it could lead to instability in public broadcasting. As the transition of power unfolds, attention is now focused on how quickly—and how far—these promised changes will be implemented.
