Sunday, April 26, 2026- A tourist has been arrested in Florence after climbing a historic statue in a reckless stunt that caused damage to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
The 28-year-old woman scaled the famous Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria, reportedly attempting to touch the statue’s genitals as part of a pre-wedding dare. Authorities say she bypassed barriers and climbed onto the sculpture before being stopped by police.
Officials confirmed the stunt resulted in “minor but significant” damage to the 16th-century monument, particularly to the horse figures and decorative elements she used to climb. Repair costs are estimated at around €5,000, and the tourist now faces charges related to damaging a protected cultural asset.
The incident has reignited concerns over tourist behavior in Italy, where authorities say social media-driven dares are increasingly putting historic sites at risk. Florence officials warn that such actions are not harmless pranks but serious offenses that threaten centuries-old cultural heritage, with potential fines and legal consequences for offenders.
