Sunday, April 26, 2026- Three tourists have been confirmed dead after being caught in a powerful avalanche in the mountainous region of Buryatia in eastern Russia, authorities say.
The incident occurred in the Munku-Sardyk area, where a group of climbers was overtaken by a sudden snow slide while moving through a high-altitude pass.
Rescue teams recovered the bodies after a search operation in difficult weather conditions, with reports indicating that the group was hit while navigating a remote section of terrain known for unstable snow conditions.
One additional person may still be unaccounted for as emergency crews continue scanning the area.
Officials have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the expedition, including weather warnings and route planning.
The tragedy adds to a series of recent avalanche incidents in the region, where shifting temperatures and heavy snowfall have increased risks for climbers and tourists.
