Japan deploys its first long-range missiles

Wednesday, April 1, 2026-Japan has deployed its first long-range missiles, marking a significant shift from its postwar self-defense-only military stance. The upgraded Type-12 land-to-ship missile, with a range of about 1,000 kilometers, has been stationed at a southwestern military base as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities amid rising regional tensions.

The deployment reflects Tokyo’s push to develop “counterstrike” capabilities, allowing it to target enemy bases if attacked. Officials say the move comes in response to an increasingly complex security environment, particularly concerns over China’s growing military presence and activity near disputed areas.

In addition to the Type-12 system, Japan is also introducing more advanced missile technologies, including hypersonic and extended-range strike weapons, with further deployments planned in the coming years. The broader military buildup includes cooperation with allies and acquisition of additional long-range systems to enhance deterrence.

However, the move has sparked domestic concern, with some citizens protesting the deployment and warning it could signal a departure from Japan’s pacifist principles. Critics argue that expanding offensive capabilities risks escalating tensions in an already volatile region.
