Thursday, April 16, 2026-An Iranian national convicted in France on charges of inciting terrorism has returned to Iran following what reports describe as a prisoner exchange between the two countries.
The woman, identified as Mahdieh Esfandiari, had been sentenced in Paris earlier this year after being found guilty of promoting or glorifying terrorism through social media posts linked to the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel.
She received a prison sentence along with a ban from French territory, according to court findings cited in reports.
Her return to Iran comes shortly after two French nationals detained in Tehran were released and allowed to leave the country, in a case widely viewed by officials and analysts as part of a broader prisoner swap arrangement.
French authorities have not officially confirmed a formal exchange agreement, though Iranian media has described the movements as linked.
The development highlights ongoing diplomatic tensions between France and Iran, where both sides have accused each other of politically motivated detentions. While the individuals involved have now been released, officials say broader negotiations between the two countries remain sensitive and unresolved.
