India mulls deployment of crocodiles and snakes at border with Bangladesh

Thursday, April 16, 2026-India is reportedly considering an unusual border security proposal involving the deployment of crocodiles and venomous snakes along riverine stretches of its frontier with Bangladesh, in an effort to deter illegal crossings in hard-to-fence areas.

According to reports, the Border Security Force (BSF) has discussed the idea internally as part of broader efforts to secure vulnerable gaps in marshy and flood-prone terrain where traditional fencing is difficult or impossible to install.

The concept would involve using natural predators as a “biological deterrent” in unfenced river channels that are frequently used for movement across the border.

Officials say the proposal remains at an early feasibility stage, with field units asked to assess practical and environmental risks, including safety concerns for nearby communities and potential ecological impact.

The idea has drawn attention because large sections of the India–Bangladesh border run through rivers and wetlands, making surveillance and physical barriers particularly challenging. At this stage, no deployment has been confirmed, and the plan is still under review.
